Metarhizium anisopliae is a common soil fungus, having a broad host range and accordingly used for biological control of soil dwelling insect pests. Metarhizium produces an array of chemically diverse secondary metabolites which nominate it as a superior entomopathogenic fungus. Metarhizium is able to degrade, penetrate and assimilate the insect cuticle using a combination of cuticle-degrading enzymes and mechanical pressure, while overcoming any stresses encountered along the way. Cyclic hexadepsipeptide destruxins are the key bioactive secondary metabolites produced by Metarhizium anisopliae.
